What are normal maps?
Normal maps are texture maps similar to bump maps. However, normal maps use three channels of information (RGB) instead of just one (grayscale).

How are normal maps created?
Unlike bump maps, which can be created by hand, normal maps must be generated using a specific tool designed for creating normal maps.

Here is an overview of v3.0 features:
  • Shared UVs. Create and organize UV islands.
  • New edge selection mode. Select edges in the UV Editor and 3D views.
  • Highlighted shared UV points and UV edges.
  • Highlighted boundary edges on the 3D model.
  • Highlighted seams in the UV Editor.
  • Orient/align UV islands. Automatically align UV islands.
  • Stitch/sew UV islands. Sew together discontinuous UVs.
  • UV Locking. UVs can be locked for tools such as LSCM UVs.
  • UV Marking. UV edges can be marked for easy cutting.
  • Interactive seam picking mode. For marking seams in the 3D views.
  • 3D Gizmo selection axis. For easier moving, rotating, and scaling in the 3D views.
  • Export textured UV map. Makes use of both UVsets.
  • Import/export lights. More compatibility between file formats.
  • Light Editor. For editing the properties of lights.

This release contains updates to support the import and export of multiple animations.

What's new for v2.33:
  • New Tool: Animation Editor. Multiple animations can now be added, deleted, and modified. New animations can be created from existing animations.
  • New Unweld Option: Unweld by edge. Creates a seam along the selected vertices.
  • Plugin Updates: The DirectX plugin now imports and exports multiple animations.
  • Library Updates: libpng was updated to version 1.2.18.

  • New Selection Tool: Select unassigned bone vertices.
  • Material Editor Updates: Automatic conversions when switching between bitmap and composite texture maps.
  • Export UV Map Updates: A fix was made for older 3DLabs WildCat graphics cards when exporting vertex colors.
  • 3D Plugin Updates: DirectX, 3DS, LWO, and COB. A fix was made to export composite texture maps.

  New Plugins May 1, 2007

A plugin for reading and writing Rhino 3DM files is now available. The plugin was developed using the openNURBS toolkit v4.0.

Meshes, materials, textures, UV coordinates, and vertex colors can be imported and exported. See the readme.txt file for more information.

  Version 2.31 released April 18, 2007

This release contains minor bugfixes and updates.

What's new for v2.31:
  • UVToMesh Update: Vertex colors are now preserved.
  • Bone Editor Update: Added local/world space tabs.

Support for reading/writing Collada .DAE files is now available.
